Jan. 6 Committee Subpoenas Facebook And Youtube Parent Companies, Twitter, Reddit



The House committee investigating the U.S. Capitol riot issued subpoenas on Thursday to the parent companies of four major social media platforms — Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and YouTube — as it seeks information on how “violent extremism” was spread on the platforms prior to the riot and if the companies made efforts to prevent this spread.

Key Facts

The committee says rioters used the platforms to plan and execute the riots, as well as spread misinformation about the outcome of the 2020 election.  

Unlike many of the subpoenas issued by the committee to former President Donald Trump’s affiliates, the subpoenas issued Thursday do not explicitly request testimony from the companies’ CEOs or other officials, only documents.
